Festival Scholarship Winners

Each year, since the festival began in 1995, a percentage of proceeds has been set aside to fund scholarships to "aid young, local, traditional musicians in continuing their music exploration and education".

Individual applicants will be selected to receive up to $500 which may be applied to the traditional music program of the applicantıs choice.  Past scholarship winners have attended the Augusta Heritage Arts Festival, the Blue Ridge Old Time Music Week at Mars Hill, NC and Steve Kaufmanıs Guitar and Mandolin Camp or have elected to have private lessons paid for over a continuing period of time.  Scholarship winners can select from classes in all levels of fiddle, banjo, guitar, acoustic bass, lap dulcimer or mandolin.

Applicants must be residents of the Central Appalachian region. Students in grades 8 through 12 and high school graduates up to age 21 may apply. (Only students/musicians of traditional acoustic instruments are allowed.)

Application packets must be completed and returned by March 15. Complete applications include the Application Form, 2 letters of reference AND an audio or video cassette demonstrating the applicantıs musicianship.

Non-profit groups, which are teaching traditional music to students, may also apply for money to pay instructors, student fees or general operating expenses.  A letter of application should state current program objectives, target participants and projected use of the money as well as provide evidence of non-profit status.  Past grants to organizations have ranged from $500 - $1,000.

Winners of the scholarship(s) will be notified by April 15.
