2004 Wayne C Henderson Festival Scholarship Winners

Jacob Hiatt
Won his scholarship playing the guitar and also plays banjo and mandolin. He is in the 9th grade at Mt. Airy High School and is from Mt. Airy NC. Jacob started out with a guitar his grandmother gave him and showed him chords on. He started going to the JAM (Junior Appalachian Musician) program at the Andy Griffith Playhouse and then took lessons from John Boulding. Has been playing guitar 4 years.

Cody McGrady
Won his scholarship playing the guitar and also plays the mandolin. He is in the 11th grade at Grayson County High School and is from Mouth of Wilson, VA. His mother borrowed a guitar from an uncle to get him started and Cody taught himself to play. He now owns two guitars of which he is very proud and has been playing guitar for 3 years. He is an honor student and an athlete. He wants to attend a music camp.

Brett Morris
Won her scholarship playing claw hammer banjo and fiddle. She is in the 12th grade at Grayson County High School and is from Elk Creek, VA. Brett was exposed to old time music and square dancing as a child but did not begin to play until she was around 15 years old. She started  by taking fiddle lessons with Eddie Bond. She later began teaching herself tunes on the banjo and now takes banjo and fiddle lessons.

Erin Morrison
Won her scholarship playing the fiddle and also plays bass and saxophone. She is in the 9th grade at Alleghany High School and is from Roaring Gap, NC. She started out in the  JAM (Junior Appalachian  Musician) program at Sparta School on a school instrument in the 5th grade. She saved money she earned pet sitting and babysitting and bought her own fiddle. She takes lessons from Scott Freeman. She is an honor student and an athlete and wants to attend a music camp.

Piney Creek Pickers Staff 

Piney Creek Pickers
Piney Creek Elementary School, Alleghany County Schools. The Piney Creek Pickers are part of the Junior Appalachian Music (JAM) program started at Sparta Elementary School in 2000. The Piney Creek Pickers program is in its' 2nd year of operation. Music instruction is provided to approximately 20 students in grades 4 through 8 twice a week for 30 minutes. Much of the funding for this program come from a Save Our Students grant from the Department of Juvenile Justice and a NEA grant from the Sparta JAM program.  The Director of the program is Allison Lewis and music instructors include, Lisa Robertson (fiddle), Bob DeSanto (guitar), and Tim Lewis (banjo).
