2005 Festival Scholarship Winners

David Wayne Butcher - $500

David is 13 years old and will be an 8th grader @ Tazewell Middle School, Tazewell, VA. He plays the fiddle and is enrolled in a string band class. He studied the Suzuki method of violin starting at age 5 and quit at age 11 to take old time and bluegrass lessons with Ebby Jewel. He comes from a big family of blue grass and old time musicians. David wants to use his money for lessons.

Makenzie Neff - $500

Makenzie is 13 years old and will be an 8th grader @ Galax Middle School, Galax, VA and plays Bass and Fiddle. She  started bass lessons at age 10 with Ashley Primm and fiddle lessons at age 12 with Scott Freeman. She is a full time bass player with a local band named the Galax Little Leaves. She wants to use her money for lessons.

Laurel Zyvoloski - $500  

Laurel is 15 years old and will be a 10th grader in the Carroll County Schools, Hillsville, VA. She started out playing the violin in the sixth grade orchestra. In the 8th grade, at the age of 12, Laurel started fiddle lessons with Scott Freeman. She would like to use her money for more lessons.

The BRMMG scholarship money is to be used for the Mom and Pop Stoneman Memorial Instrument Lending Library which was formed in 2005. The lending library makes traditional acoustic instruments available to anyone expressing an interest and desire to learn to play with priority given to students 6-18 years of age. Anyone living within a 100 mile radius of Galax, VA can borrow an instrument for up to two years, renewable in 6 month intervals.  All applicants must agree to take three introductory lessons on their instrument and demonstrate commitment and motivation.
Ashe County Arts Council for support of the Ashe County JAM Project - $500 Jane Lanon, Executive Director,  Ashe Co. Arts Council
The JAM (Junior Appalachian Musicians) program is in its’ 5th year of operation and was designed to help Ashe County children reclaim their musical heritage and traditions.  Started in 2001 with instruction on banjo, fiddle and guitar offered at one school, the program is now offered at three sites and incorporates all the elementary schools in Ashe County. Scholarship money is to be used to help stabilize the Ashe JAM Project by paying instructor fees and helping to cover the general administrative costs of the program.
Mt. Rogers Community Music Program - $500

The Mount Rogers Community Music Program is an outgrowth of the Albert Hash Memorial Band at the Mt. Rogers Combined School and is in its’ third year.  It was conceived in order to reach those students and community members who were unable to participate in the music program during the daytime. There are approximately 40 students of all ages (4 to late 70’s) who receive one on one instruction on traditional instruments and participate in informal jam sessions. Scholarship funds are to be used for music supplies and to offer a stipend for visiting artists.
Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) - $500

The Junior Appalachian Musicians program is in its’ 6th year of operation at Sparta Elementary School, Sparta, NC. It was  designed to inspire and provide opportunities for Appalachian children to partake in their traditional mountain music heritage and assist traditional artists in developing teaching techniques to help preserve this vital heritage.  Two afternoons a week, approximately 50 elementary school students receive group instruction on traditional acoustic instruments such as the banjo, mandolin, guitar, fiddle and dulcimer and also receive group clogging instructions. Scholarship money is to be for scholarships for student unable to pay for the instruction and to assist in the funding of instructor salaries.
